Children's Chapel
St. Mary's Children's Chapel

Children's Chapel takes place during the Service of the Word of the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services September through June. The order of service for Children's Chapel is adapted from the Book of Common Prayer.  Time is taken to answer questions throughout the service. Particular care is given during the Prayers of the People to hear the concerns offered up by the children.   Children are invited into active participation throughout the chapel service.

During both services, children leave the nave during the opening hymn, following the cross.  At 9:00 a.m., 1st-3rd graders go directly to the chapel for worship and then rejoin their parents at the Peace.  3 year olds through Kindergarteners go downstairs for play time, then come up to the chapel for worship. They rejoin their parents immediately before receiving communion.  At 11:15 a.m. all children (age 3-3rd grade) come directly into the chapel for the service and then rejoin their families at the Peace.

Children too young to participate in chapel are most welcome in the Nursery. Children older than 3rd grade are welcome in chapel, but their role will be one of modeling appropriate behavior and serving as a helper and leader to younger children.  Children are able to serve as acolytes in the main service beginning in 4th grade, and so they are encourage to observe the service in preparation for that role.

The hope of Children's Chapel is to worship God with joy, to encourage active participation by all of our young worshipers, to teach about the Love of Jesus and about our Liturgy, and to help our children get to know each other and their church community. Clergy and seminarians offer homilies and liturgical leadership.  Parishioners accompany on the keyboard and other musicians (aspiring and accomplished) add to our "joyful noise." We have a corps of adult volunteers to guide our children during chapel.  Parents are always welcome to join us, especially if they will lend a kind hand where needed.
